1050 feet of 1/2" magnetic tape (belt-driven cartridge with 2.3X the recording surface area of Travan)
OPERATION
Once the EST cartridge is introduced, the mech soft load assembly drives the cartridge to a rigid and
precise reference datum using nip rollers that engage the sides of the cartridge. Once seated, the
cartridge capstan is axially engaged to the drive shaft of the mech motor. A unique proprietary optical
sensing method is employed at each hub to determine the linear tape position (LPOS). This LPOS
signal eliminates the need to put holes in the tape to sense the tape ends. With control from an
executive host controller, the EST mech becomes a "turn-key" tape transport capable of "mirror
winding" magnetic tape at 4 m/s.
